about

It is pretty rare to meet a guitarist who considers playing in open tunings for a reason other than to obtain a fast and immediate sounding effect. Being easy enough to understand, the open tuning at first flatters the ear but can easily anesthetize the facility of prompt reaction to the instrumentalist.

Steve Baughman's playing does not fall into this trap. His technique is impeccable and his quest for pure sound is moving. He has found his own medium and is en route to his personal musical journey in a very generous and elegant manner.

Steve's enthusiasm is obvious, but his thought and self distance are mature enough to offer us an album of transcended guitar music with heart and spirit.

Very warm thanks to Pierre Bensusan, who has graciously shared with me his observations and insights into my journey as a guitarist. Finally, I'd wish to express my appreciation to fiddlers Martin Hayes and Alisdair Frasier, who more than any other musicians have helped me understand the importance of tone and expressiveness in music and the primacy of feeling over flash
